CHAPTER FORTY

KALEB

Watching her sleep is something I never knew I needed until today. Laying on her front, her face turned towards me and her long, chocolate brown hair fanned out and cascading down her back. I study her every feature, not wanting to miss a single detail on her face. The light dusting of freckles that branched over her nose. They were barely visible, but to me, I saw every single one. Her plump bow lips parted, soft snores passing them which made me smile.

Sighing blissfully, I rolled onto my back as my mind flashed back to last night. A very small part of me was disappointed in myself that I gave in to her temptation, gave in to the forbidden fruit that I have wanted to taste since the moment I laid eyes on her. The thing about Connie is that I feel so protective over her. The thought of her leaving to go back to her normal life terrifies me, but she isn’t mine to keep. She isn’t mine for me to have that possessiveness over. She is a job. A client. Once she is ready to leave, that will be it. No more rays of the sunshine that she is in my life. I’ll go back to being the grumpy, miserable fucker I always was. I scoff, shaking my head from side to side softly.

I wasn’t always grumpy. If anything, I was a lot like my brother, Keaton, until he married the spawn of Satan herself. I was so carefree; I didn’t give a shit. Until it all went wrong.

I had a client five years ago, she was a little older than Connie, but in the same situation, just not with the vermin paps following her around and snooping. I kept her safe, moved her in with me whilst I made sure she was away from the devil that abused her day in, day out. She wasn’t a paid client, her case was right time, right place. I saw her boyfriend getting handsy with her, saw the fear in her eyes and the way she held herself. I stood in the shadows until he left to go and get another drink for his already poisoned and intoxicated bloodstream. As soon as he was out of sight, I made my move. Laying here next to Connie, my thoughts can’t help but slip into the past, recounting the memory of that day.

“Are you okay?” my voice was low, but loud enough for her to hear over the music that was softly playing in the background.

She nods but I can see her trembling in the low light of the room.

“I can help you,” I hushed, my voice a little more rushed now as I worried that he would be back any second. Looking over my shoulder, I caught sight of the dickhead paying for his drink, urgency spiking within me.

“We need to move, now,” the panic was evident in my voice, “please, come with me, I can keep you safe,” my hand squeezes the top of her arm reassuringly, and she nods.
